Schools across Toms River Regional Schools today participated in True Blue Monday as a means of honoring the community’s dedicated police forces.
In a message sent to all district staff last Thursday, Superintendent David Healy wrote, “Our school district will recognize this Monday, September 24 as ‘True Blue Monday.’ We ask that all of our students and staff wear the color blue (jeans are fine) to school on Monday to honor the men and women who literally protect us each day.”
TRRS has established a strong partnership with the greater Toms River police departments including Toms River, Beachwood, South Toms River, and Pine Beach. Most recently, police assisted the district with training in line with an revamped safety and security program.
The concept of True Blue Monday is in conjunction with Toms River Police Department’s Vest-A-Cop campaign, an annual fundraiser aimed at equipping new police officers with bullet-proof vests, each of which can cost up to $1,000. In addition to wearing blue, staff members were encouraged to make a small donation of $3. The district is hopeful that its contributions might help TRPD purchase at least two vests for officers.
Although proceeds from True Blue Monday will benefit TRPD, the spirit of the day is not limited to one department. “True Blue Monday is to honor all law enforcement agencies throughout the county, state and country and in this case occurring simultaneously with the TRPD 28th Annual VEST-A-COP,” wrote Healy. “In terms of our regional school district, we honor and appreciate the support of Toms River, Beachwood, South Toms River and Pine Beach PD's and are indebted to each of them for their service to our respective school communities.”
On behalf of the school district, Superintendent Healy will attend the Vest-A-Cop fundraiser event this evening at the Pizza Hut in the K-Mart shopping center on Rt. 37. More information on that event can be found here.
