Navy Lakehurst sponsored a Luncheon in Honor of Veterans for Veterans Day Nov. 10, which which was held at the Toms River Elks Lodge. Representing Toms River Intermediate South were students Colin Graham, an eighth grader, and seventh-grader Ryan Svenson. With school being out for the week, Colin and Ryan were able to attend and shake hands with each veteran in attendance and thank them for their service, while handing each vet one of the 70 pillows created during Mrs. Koch’s marking period 1 Life Skills II class.
Mrs. Askenis and Mrs. Hawks’ classes assisted in stuffing some of the pillows in their Life Skills class. Students like Colin, Emma Grunin, and Jayden Noedling from the eighth-grade Sewing Club stayed after school to aid in the production.
The ceremony was poignant with candle lighting and speeches, a vocal performance by a veteran, and a bag piper and a color guard salute. The veterans were clearly moved while expressing their gratitude for the pillows. Also in attendance were Colin’s mother and Ryan’s mom, grandmother, and little sister.
Intermediate South’s Mr. Austin helped produce the “Thank You for your Service” tags which each student signed and sewed to their pillow. Machine-embroidered thank you cards were also made by the students, and the project proved to be a genuine collaborative effort. Giving back to the community is a strong focus at TRIS, and evident through the skills and talents shared by students during this project.
