District Philosophy for Mathematics

The essential intent of the Toms River Regional School District’s mathematics program is to develop students who can think critically and collaborate to solve problems creatively. This will prepare students to reach their maximum potential and participate as successful citizens in a diverse, information-based global community. Students will actively engage and participate in meaningful mathematical learning experiences through problem-solving and discourse on tasks that all students can access. The model supports a culture of student inquiry into the application of skills to real world scenarios, sophisticated mathematical communication, collaboration and questioning. Mistakes are viewed as a window to the path toward growth and understanding. As a result, students will develop the habits of mind that expand their ability to problem solve, reason critically, construct and defend viable arguments, and communicate their thought processes effectively.
