YOUNG AUTHOR'S DAY AT CITTA ELEMENTARY
Tuesday, February 5, 2008

Author and illustrator DyAnne DiSalvo visited Citta Elementary School for Young Author's Day. Ms. DiSalvo has written and illustrated many children’s books, most of which have a theme relating to communities. The school's theme for the event was “Unity in the Community". After students became familiar with Ms. DiSalvo’s stories, they participated in a variety of activities related to them and decorated classroom doors and hallways to represent the community.

One of Ms. DiSalvo’s stories, Uncle Willie and the Soup Kitchen, is based on Mr. William Hearne.  Mr. Hearne is the late uncle of Citta School’s technology/media teacher Ms. Hearne.  After Ms. DiSalvo met Mr. Hearne when they volunteered together at a soup kitchen in Brooklyn, New York, Ms. DiSalvo decided he would make a great character for a book.  This story, as well as others, were featured in her presentation to students.

Several of Mr. William Hearne’s family members came to the afternoon program and Ms. DiSalvo was excited to meet them.  Also while she was there, Ms. DiSalvo illustrated a picture while talking with students and it will be framed and hung in the school’s Media Center.
