SCHOOLS RECEIVE GRANT MONEY
Thursday, April 10, 2008

Last spring, Intermediate South, Intermediate East and Intermediate North applied for and won a competitive $25,000 grant from the OceanFirst Foundation.  The goal of the School Library/Media Center Enhancement Grant Program is to build the capacity of K-12 school libraries and to encourage a love of reading and learning.

Mr. Benshetler, media specialist at Intermediate South, Mrs. Byrne at Intermediate East, and Mr. Lenzo at Intermediate North, worked together on the grant entitled “Summeread”, which aligned with the school district’s “Summeread” Program.

“Summeread” is a collaborative effort between the school district's intermediate schools and the Ocean County Library, which is designed to encourage middle school students to read independently and hopefully foster a lifelong interest in reading.  The “Summeread” Guide of books has been so successful that it is now used as a selection guide by teachers and students in grades 6, 7 & 8 throughout the school year.  This reading guide consists of almost 400 current, high interest, and award winning titles.

The grant specifies that the intermediate schools share the $25,000 grant for the purpose of buying digital audio books, Playaways, CDs and books that correspond with the many titles in the “Summeread” Guide.  These items will especially assist students with reading difficulties and special needs so that they may achieve success with the expectations of the “Summeread” Program.
