The captivating and romantic musical, Once on This Island, will be presented in March on the Toms River High School South stage. Based on the original Hans Christian Andersen tale of The Little Mermaid, with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, the action unfolds through the eyes of several Storytellers who introduce, comment on, and propel the story forward. At the center of the tale is Ti Moune, a poor peasant girl sent on a journey by the Gods to test the strength of love against the power of death. The age-old story of star-crossed lovers gets a shot of Calypso rhythm and Caribbean heat in this bittersweet musical romance, which features tunes guaranteed to leave the crowd snapping its fingers and tapping its toes to the island beat. Staged with minimal props, sets, and costumes, Once on This Island delivers melody, love and drama with a tropical flair.

This musical entertainment, directed by Kristine Perry, stars Anna DeBlasio as the starry-eyed orphan Ti Moune, who saves the life and then falls in love with the wealthy Daniel, played by Kyle Tomalin. The production also features Erin O'Meally as the beautiful Erzulie, Goddess of Love, Jenna Bitow as Asaka, nurturing Goddess of the Earth, Logan Toomey as Agwe, the powerful God of Water, and Andy Brown as the destructive Papa Ge, God of Death. In the roles of the versatile Storytellers are Ruby Berker, Joey Diaz, Michael McMahon, Jessica McKinnon, James Merrell, and Katie O'Brien. Emily Nielsen portrays Mama Euralie and Tonton Julian is played by Vincent Lujardo. The curtain will rise at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 12 and again at 8 p.m. on Friday March 13 and Saturday March 14. All tickets are $5.
