Stained Glass Window Designs

1-2 40 minute art periods
Objective: The learner will study glass art and create a stained glass window design.
Activity:
- View examples of real stained glass and discuss materials and technigues the stained glass artist uses.
- Draw a simple design with pencil in the center of a 12" x 12" white piece of paper.
- Draw divider lines in the area around the design to create more "glass spaces."
- Outline pencil with black permanent marker (lead lines).
- Fill in all spaces with paint markers or tempera paint and brushes using a limited palette of colors.
- Students critique their work and select several students' work to feature on school windows in hallway.
- Teacher and/or students replicate their designs on paper to the actual windows using only tempera paints (use black tempera in place of black permanent marker) for lead lines.
Materials: Real stained glass examples, pencils, black permanent markers, tempera paint markers, tempera paints, brushes, 12" x 12" white paper, newspaper.
Standards: 1.3 All students will utilize arts elements and arts media to produce artistic products and performance.
Progress Indicator #1: Demonstrate appropriate use of technology tools, techniques, and media in the creation of dance, music, theater, and visual arts.
