Art Lesson Grade~ 1

Objective~ Students will be able to create a penguin out of paper strips using radial symmetry and adding various other shapes from cut paper.

Procedure~ Discuss penguins and their habitats. Discuss radial symmetry. Demo how to bring strips together 2 at a time (have students hold 2-4 strips together with glue and count to 30) to form a ball shape; place to the side for glue to set. Students use an oval pattern for stomach and a wing pattern for 2 wings. Have students cut 2 large triangles for feet and one smaller triangle for beak. Attach wiggly eyes. Tip Have students gently squeeze the center of the ball shape while gently squeezing the ends~ this helps to change the penguin from a round shape to a more oval shape; this should be done before adding the other details. If available~ attach penguins to a small block of Styrofoam or white matt board~ this will help to prevent the penguins from falling over; stapling works best.
