Procedure:
Week 1: Read “A
Bad Case of Stripes”. Have students look around to see if there are any stripes
in the room. (Clothing, flag, walls etc) Review how to use watercolors
correctly to paint their striped background.
Distribute 9x12 white paper (assist students with names), paints, and
water and let students paint the background with stripes.
Week2: Review the
definition of a Pattern. Have students
look at a checkerboard and find the characteristics of this pattern.
(Alternating colors uses only 2 colors, same size squares). With a crayon, demonstrate on 5 x 8
newsprint how to draw 2 horizontal lines and 3 vertical lines to create the boxes.
Have students put small dots of one color in every other box. Then take another color crayon and put dots
in the alternating boxes. Let students
color 2 rows to practice checkerboard pattern.
Upon successful practice sheets, demo how to draw onto background
stripes using markers.
Week3: Distribute
pre cut construction paper for flowerpot, flowers and leaves. Introduce “ table line” and explain how to
glue pot on the table, not the table line.
Show students how to draw stems (suggest 5 or 6) have students draw and
cut out flowers from small square construction papers. Demo 3 petals, spiral,
tulip shape or organic shape. Students
cut leaves from small green pieces. Review
gluing techniques and let students glue, leaves, and flowers. Complete next
(fourth) week if necessary.
