Objective: To experiment with color using tints and shades of at least 2 hues to creat a 3-D painting/mobile.
Materials: 18" x 24" heavyweight drawing paper, pencils, black permanent pens, tempera paint, brushes, newspaper, string.
References/Art Appreciation: Modern/Abstract Art; Picasso/Color; Mondrian/Line Design; Calder/Form.
Procedure: Paper is folded in half. Each half will become a warm color/cool color painting. Students have previously made tint/shade strips in preparation for this project. Ask students to begin a continuous line design on each half making sure their line reaches all 4 sides. Trace lines over in permanent pen. Begin making tints and shades of at least 2 hues per half sheet in each section of line design. Note that one side will be warm colors, the other side will be cool. Student then uses scissors to cut away some of the straight edges to create an abstract form. Retrace contour with balck permanent pen. Glue 3 sides, stuff with newspaper, glue 4th side, hang on string.
Evaluation: Project should culminate study of color theory, line design, and appreciation of modern masters.
