Miniature Landscapes

As Different As Night And Day

Grade 6: General Art 2 to 3-40 minute classes. New Jersey Standard 1.1, 1.2, 1.6

 

OBJECTIVES:

Studio: TSW demonstrate their knowledge of the elements of design by creating a pair of textured collages. TSW visually communicate the feeling of landscapes at different times of day by carefully selecting paper because of color or texture.

History: TSW view a variety of landscape prints for inspiration and suggestions.

Criticism: TSW discuss prints, my example and student work.

Aesthetics: TSW appreciate the variety of collages created by the class.

 

VOCABULARY: collage, texture, line, color, shape, value, review tints and shades.

 

GRADING: Based on both the ability to follow steps involved, as well as a creative end product.

 

MATERIALS: Exploring Art text, examples, variety of papers, prints of landscapes, stick glue, cardboard.

SAFETY: Establish art room rules.

 

PROCEDURE: Begin by reading in text pages 72 and 73. Discuss elements of design and other vocabulary words. Show prints and discuss characteristics of a landscape. Make a list with students. Show my example and ask for opinion of it. Demonstrate thought process and ripping of paper needed. Emphasize the texture. No one glue today because you may find some paper at home worth using. Clean up. Discuss finished work or work in progress.

DEMONSTRATION:            Demonstrate constructing collages with torn paper.



REVIEW: Art room rules and procedures as discussed. Listen attentively to my lesson and peers questions. Concentrate on your own work. Be original. Can your collage convey a night scene? How can you show the beach?

 

MOTIVATION AND DISCUSSION: Students motivated by seeing teacher's examples, art history, text readings and by their genuine enthusiasm for collage. Discussion includes text, knowledge of vocabulary, review and closure.

 

CLOSURE: End each class with a question about work in progress, knowledge of vocabulary, and observations. We are ready to use our knowledge of landscape and collage to create with.



Some students created sea and land collages.
Then they wrote haiku to describe each work of art.

Other students used flowers and trees as the subjects of their collages. All students made one night scene and one day scene.

 

ASSESSMENT: TSW recall and verbally define facts, concepts, processes, and rules. TSW compose works of art that effectively demonstrate solutions to a given problem.  TSW show interest in discussing ideas about art. TSW properly care for tools and materials shared by other students.

 

DISMISSAL: Five minute clean-up time. All tables need to be washed off with a sponge.
