Grade level: 3rd and up
Time: 2-3 40 minute classes
Lesson submitted by Paula Schinski
Paramus Elementary
Goal: To create a multi-media landscape
Objectives:
To understand and draw the anatomy of a tree
To create effects of reflections using symmetry
To use space effectively, the foreground, middle and background
To use multi-media within one composition
Materials:
- 12" x 18" 80 1b. white paper or watercolor paper
- Oil pastels
- Watercolor paints
- Tempera paint (autumn palette)
- Newspaper/paper towels
- Brushes/cups/water containers
Procedure
Fold the 12 x 18 white paper the horizontally
- On the middle fold going up, draw a series of trees using the "Y" method. Keep the tree very simple and varied. Some tall and some bending. Try to work them across the paper and fill it up. Demonstrate how to continue splitting the branches into "v's" and thin out the branches to twigs.
- Do not draw below the fold line; the space below is the water, which will reflect the trees.
- Once you've drawn the trees, fold the paper back again, and with the edge of a ruler rub the trees so that the oil pastel image transfers on to the bottom (water area).
- The background and foreground will be done in a watercolor wash method. Demonstrate using watercolor paints correctly and create a pond/sky background. Students can choose to use a warm sky and a cool pond or both cool sky and cool pond. Set to dry for next class.
- Continue demonstration so students will be prepared for next class on how to finish final touches to the trees and be ready to mount their pictures.
- The next class, using your brush, dab autumn colors onto each tree ABOVE THE FOLD ONLY applying the paint in a thick fashion, but be sure to dot the branches so it will have the texture of a clump of leaves. By applying the paint thick it will allow us to leave a faint image on the trees on the other side when we fold the papers over to create the reflective look that we are trying to achieve in our paintings. Encourage students to paint quickly and not to over do the paint, as the trees should have a "sparse look". Set to dry.
- Final step is to mount on to matte board and title and sign.
