Materials:

Begin lesson by showing prints of Paul Klee. "Howling Dog". Discuss the style of abstract painting. Klee painted an abstract dog by emphasizing line, shape, color and texture instead of including details to make his dog naturalistic.

Vocabulary: abstract, contour, line, shape, color texture, and design

The Assignment:
The student will create a contour of an animal and create an interesting design using line, shape, color and texture.

Procedure:
  1. The student will decide what animal he or she will be designing. It's helpful to look in National Geographic Magazine.
  2. The student will start with a contour line.
  3. The student will look at the shape of the animal and decide where to place the animal to create an interesting composition
  4. The student will start to create texture with lines. The animal will be interesting if there is a variety of lines.
  5. When the student is done deciding he or she can consider the color choice he or she might use to create an interesting animal: hot/cold, complementary tints, shades, etc.
  6. Color the animal with colored pencils.
  7. The animal will be the most important image in the composition.
  8. The background will be colored with muted color or images.
  9. Mount the piece.
  10. Critique and display
