WHILE SHOWING ILLUSTRATIONS OF INDIVIDUAL STEPS, REVIEW BASIC DRAWING VOCABULARY:

 

1.         STUDY THE FORM OF THE SHELL FOR ITS BASIC SHAPE & SKETCH LIGHTLY - ENLARGE VERY SMALL SHELLS.

2.         FOLLOW CONTOURS (OUTLINES) WITH EYES & DRAW THE LINES THAT YOU ACTUALLY SEE.

3.         OBSERVE DETAILS IN SHELLS & DRAW LINEAR TEXTURES (SURFACE) USING PARALLEL STROKES, CROSS HATCH, STIPPLE TECHNIQUES IN DEMO.

4.         LOOK FOR VALUE GRADATIONS ON SHELLS - LIGHT, MEDIUM, DARK AREAS & CAST SHADOWS. CURVED STROKES FOLLOWING CONTOUR ENHANCE THE 3D IMAGE ON A 2D SURFACE.

5.         MUST COMPLETE TWO DRAWINGS - EITHER TWO DIFFERENT SHELLS OR TWO DIFFERENT VIEWS OF SAME SHELL.

P:    STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE TRIAL VALUE SCALES - ONE WARM, ONE COOL DEMONSTRATING LIGHT TO DARK VALUES WITH WATER ADJUSTMENT PLUS     PRACTICE PALETTE PAPER OF MIXED EARTHTONES USING FORMULA.

 

1.  NOW THAT HAVE AN IDEA OF HOW TO CREATE DIFF. VALUES, BEGIN MIXING AN EARTH TONE COLOR ( EITHER WITH YELLOW, PINK, BEIGE, OR PEACH TONES AND WASH IT OUT TO ITS PALEST VALUE).

2.  APPLY THIS WASH TO MOST OF SHELL- LET DRY - WE WILL BE PAINTING WITH WET BRUSH ON DRY PAPER (WET ON WET CANNOT BE CONTROLLED AS WELL- BUT MAY WANT TO TRY IT IN SMALL AREAS)

3.   REPEAT THIS PROCESS, MIXING SLIGHTLY DEEPER VALUES FOR MEDIUM SHADED AREAS, AND MORE CONTRAST FOR DARKER SHADED AREAS TO DARKEST VALUES OF CAST SHADOW AREAS.  EACH TIME A LAYER IS ADDED, IT IS CALLED A GLAZE (TRANSPARENT QUALITIES OF WATERCOLORS, ALLOW THE FIRST LAYER TO SHOW THROUGH SLIGHTLY, BUILDING DEPTH.)

 

BASIC RULE: ALWAYS PAINT LIGHT TO DARK- DON'T USE

BLACK PIGMENT, MIX COMPLEMENTARIES INSTEAD!

IF USE DARK FIRST, CANNOT BE REMOVED AND WILL MAKE SHELL LOOK ARTIFICIAL

 

4.   MISTAKES - IF YOU SEE THAT A COLOR IS TOO STRONG FOR AN AREA, TRY TO BLOT A PAPER TOWEL STRAIGHT DOWN ON AREA (THIS WILL HELP REMOVE SOME OF THE PIGMENT) - CAN DO SAME IF WANT TO CREATE INTERESTING TEXTURES - STOP BEFORE COLORS GET MUDDY!

5.   BUILD DEEPER VALUES GRADUALLY, BUT DON'T BE AFRAID TO EXPERIMENT WITH NEW COMBINATIONS ON PALETTES. IF YOU LIKE THE RESULTS THERE, CAN ADD TO SHELL PAINTING.

6.   NEGATIVE SPACE MAY REMAIN WHITE OR BECOME A WASHED C6NTRAST TO SHELL.

7.   PROPER CLEAN UP

 

E:   OBSERVE FINISHED PRODUCT FOR OVERALL SIGNS OF GOOD USE OF COLOR MIXES & WASHED GLAZES TO ENHANCE 3D IMAGE OF SHELL.
