The Lesson: Keith Haring Name Design

Grade: 4th and 5th

Time: 2 - 45 minute sessions

 

Objectives:  Students will study Keith Haring's works and then create a drawing of their name filled with lines.

 

Anticipated Skills:

-observe a few of Keith Haring's artworks

-learn about the different types of line

-draw using markers

-create a drawing of students' names using different lines and doodles

 

Vocabulary/Concepts:

            -line, doodle, curved lines, horizontal lines, vertical lines, zigzag lines, diagonal lines, Keith Haring

 

Materials/Resources:

-white drawing paper, pencils, markers, Keith Haring's works, project example

 

Motivation:

            Introduce the students to Keith Haring and his work. Explain to them that Keith Haring was considered a graffiti artist. Discuss graffiti and where it can be found. Further discuss what is found in Keith Haring's works... .line.

 

Work Procedure:

            Explain to the students that they will be creating their own drawing of their name with the use of line. Demonstrate to the students how to draw their name in large block letters. Inside the letters will be doodles and lines similar to Keith Haring's style. The designs should detailed and intricate. Once the letters are finished the background can also be decorated with lines and doodles.

 

Cleanup/Distribution:

            A student from each table will get a tray with the materials and later return the tray with the same materials.

 

Evaluative Criteria/Assessment/Critique:

            Ask if any of the students would like to share their line drawings with the rest of the class. Discuss the different lines used in each drawing.

 

Closure:

            Review the artist we discussed. Ask the students to review what they thought were interesting facts about Keith Haring. Briefly talk about the use of different lines in their names.
