Objective:         The students will be able to create a kaleidoscope drawing, showing the basic art rules (shading, highlighting, coloring, etc.) The focus of this project is to increase design & drawing skills, improve hand eye coordination and to develop an understanding of mirror images.

1.1     This lesson will increase the student's aesthetic awareness

1.2     This will help students refine perceptual, physical & technical skills through creating...

1.3     They will utilize arts elements & arts media to produce artistic products.

1.4     Students will demonstrate knowledge of the process of critique. This will be done at the end of the project when we will critique the works as a class.

1.5     They will be able to identify the various historical, social & cultural influences and traditions, which generated artistic accomplishments through the ages.

1.6     They will develop design skills for planning the form & function of space structures, objects, sound and events.

Procedure:  Discuss what a kaleidoscope is and how we view them. Explain mirror images.

Methods:  Have the students begin by looking for ideas in magazines and books. They will then trace a wedge shape l/6th of a circle onto tracing paper, two times. They then trace their designs onto the tracing paper wedge. The design must go over both sides of the wedge and fill most of it.  The more busy the design the better. The design is then flipped over and traced on the second wedge (mirror image).  A square sheet of white paper with a circle drawn on it is then given to the student. These two designs will then go next to each other alternating~ as you go around the circle. Transfer designs using graphite paper. Alternate the images so that they mirror each other. The design is then colored with colored pencils and outlined with thin markers.

Materials:  Oak tag wedges, 4"x8" tracing paper (2), 16"x16" white paper, books and magazines (ideas), colored pencils and markers.
