Shape Trace





 

I.            OBJECTIVES

A.  To make a picture from one repeated object

B.  To be aware the overlapping object makes new shapes

C.  Define and recognize positive and negative space

D.  Recognize both as opposites

E.  Understand objects have shapes and not all shapes are objects

 

II.            MATERIALS

A.  Paper 6"x9" white or manila

B.  Paper 12"x18" white or manila

C.  Pencils

D.  Erasers

E.  Color pencils

F.  Art history picture (Henri Matisse, Large Composition With Masks)

G.  Scissors

 

III.  PROCEDURE

A. Show example of art, (Henri Matisse, Large Composition With Masks)

B. Point out the repeated shape has only one color in Matisse's art

C. Ask what is the same and what is different in the picture

D. Talk about the picture

E. Discuss objectsand "shapes"

F. Discuss the steps in the project

1. Draw an outline of an object (something they can touch like a ball, but not a circle) on paper 6"x9" with pencil, as big as possible

2. Cut out the object

3. Trace the object on the paper 12"x l8"

4. The object can be placed randomly or thought out

5. Trace until paper is filled and each is overlapped by one or more objects

6. Color each space one color

 

IV.   REMARKS

A. Students should only trace (not draw what is on the inside, outline of a soccer ball but not the black and white patches)

 

V.   EVALUATION

A. Each student will be able to create a 2d picture

B. Students will become more aware of the shapes of objects in their picture and in their environment

C. See the shapes of the overlap lines
