Helium gas discharge tube. The pink color is characteristic of helium. The element was discovered when the emission lines in light from the sun was analyzed and showed lines that were not seen for any of the known elements. The existence of the new emission lines was taken as proof that there was a "new" element in the sun. Later research resulted in isolation of helium here on earth.
