More opportunity. Stronger schools. Every student.

Beginning with the 2027–28 school year, Toms River Regional Schools plans three connected changes: elementary schools serving K–6, Intermediate East and Intermediate South serving grades 7–8, and The Dolphin Academy opening at the current Intermediate North campus.

One plan, three opportunities

K–6 elementary schools: One more year to grow. One more year to lead.

Sixth graders will remain in their elementary school communities for an additional year while moving among subject-area teachers. The district is planning elementary-level extracurricular and athletic experiences for sixth graders across its schools.

Two schools for grades 7–8

Intermediate East and Intermediate South will serve seventh and eighth graders. Students formerly zoned for Intermediate North will attend East or South under updated attendance zones. The district does not plan to change high school placement.

The Dolphin Academy: A place to learn, grow, and belong

The Dolphin Academy is planned as a district-operated public specialized school for students ages 3–21. It will expand local options for students with complex needs through specialized learning spaces, coordinated supports, and community connections.

Every placement remains individual. A student's IEP team, including the family, considers the student's needs and the least restrictive environment. A disability classification alone does not determine Academy placement. Specialized programs will also continue in other district schools.

Planning for September 2027

The district is developing transportation tiers, schedules, classroom layouts, staffing, and facility updates. It plans to share more details and host family information sessions and walk-throughs as the transition advances. Visit the Dolphin Academy web page for more, including:
