Public Vote April 16

March 8, 2024-- Toms River Regional Schools has received approval from the New Jersey Department of Education to move forward with a referendum to add Seaside Heights into its district. The public vote will be held April 16, 2024.

"I approve the application submitted by the Petitioners and authorize the proposed referendum," wrote NJDOE Acting Commissioner Kevin Dehmer in his letter to the district, which can be accessed in full below.

Superintendent Michael Citta conducted an in-depth, sit-down interview at the TRSTV studios March 1 discussing the merger in detail. On the heels of the state's approval to put this out to a public vote, more is planned.

What's next?

March 12, 2024-- Citta will host a series of Town Hall-style meetings beginning March 18 to further discuss what's at stake for Toms River and Seaside Heights. The dates, times, and locations of those meetings were released March 11 via a flyer distributed to schools and the public (right), but they are:

  • Monday, March 18 at High School North, 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday, March 19 at Intermediate South, 6 p.m.
  • Thursday, March 21 at High School East, 6 p.m.

Wednesday, March 20 is a public school board meeting.

Also developed following the referendum's approval was a one-sheet FAQ flyer highlighting some of the major talking points surrounding the potential merger. That flyer can be viewed below, along with other collateral including Spanish versions of the FAQ sheet and Town Hall flyer, and the state's letter of approval.

"It's so, so important to me and to everyone here that we do everything we can to educate people on this important issue," said Citta. "And I want folks to hear it directly from me, so they have nothing but the facts. I look forward to seeing everyone at our Town Hall meetings next week."
