Roberto Clemente Day High School East photo 1

Sept. 16, 2025- Raiders and pirates aren't too different, so it was apropos that High School East spent Monday, Sept. 15 honoring the greatest Pirate of them all.

The occasion was Roberto Clemente Day, established by Major League Baseball to honor the Hall of Fame player and beloved humanitarian. Clemente was famous for not only his hitting prowess, incredibly strong arm and defense, but also for hosting baseball clinics for underprivileged youth free of charge. He delivered financial aid and supplies to people in his native Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and other countries in Latin America, and was on such a mission of goodwill following an earthquake in Nicaragua when a plane crash took his life in December of 1972.

In addition to the day in his honor, MLB annually presents the Roberto Clemente Award to recognize the player who best represents the game of baseball through sportsmanship, community involvement, and positive contributions, both on and off the field. It's these values that represent "the Raider Way" and, in combination with the kickoff of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 through Oct. 15) and the "ALL IN" theme for the 2025-2026 school year, it was with Clemente in mind that HSE staff and students donned their favorite sports jerseys yesterday.

"As a school community, we strive to instill the attributes that Clemente embodied in our students," said Hispanic Heritage Club advisor Liz Rodriguez.

As part of MLB's celebration of Roberto Clemente Day yesterday, all Puerto Rican players were permitted to wear Clemente's uniform no. 21 in his honor. All teams were provided optional commemorative “21” patches to be worn on their jerseys during games, and all of the Pirates players and coaches wore Clemente's No. 21.

As for the Raiders, their jerseys varied in number, team, and sport, but the spirit of the occasion was all the same. Additional photos below.
