June 15, 2026- What started as a few students crocheting with their favorite teacher turned into a movement.

On June 11 at the school, Intermediate East students put their talent and hearts into crocheting blankets for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy treatment. The effort in goodwill, inspired by teacher Christina Gould, also led to a special guest appearance from Community Medical Center Development Director Kelly Servodio, who talked to the students about careers at the hospital and opportunities to support a wider patient population, before graciously accepting the heartfelt donations on behalf of CMC patients.

Students asked questions about ways they can better support Community Medical Center, and they all agreed they would like to expand the relationship. Next year they hope to make seat belt covers for patients using ports, and are excited to rise to the challenge.

Students had implemented fundraising efforts to secure their materials, and a favorite was the student-created T-shirt from Always Driven featuring Gould’s adorable dog Winnie. From this arts-integrated experience, students learned about patterns — an important skill in mathematics — and about working together as a team toward a common goal.
