June 2, 2020-- Students at Intermediate South were challenged by teacher Bernice Koch to make their own face masks to protect themselves better from COVID-19.

Although it proved to be challenging, students worked with their families to find the appropriate tools and materials to make their own personal protective gear. Mrs. Koch, who is retiring at year's end, has always stayed on the cutting edge of design and helping students solve problems, persist in finding solutions, and figure out how to keep doing better.

super mask

Frank Cherubini-- I cut my mask from an old sock. I liked using paint markers to make red, white and blue stripes. Then I cut the fabric in a line on each side to attach to my ears. I decorated my mask with stickers. I stitched the corners to make it tighter. That was the hardest part for me to do. I like my mask and will use it when I go out.

S Anderson
Shealyn Anderson-- I used an old T-shirt and two hair ties to make my mask. It wasn't perfect, but I had a lot of fun making it! I sewed part of it together, and measured it out. I would definitely make another one.
Michael mask

Michael Grieco-- Well it was hard at first. I wasn’t able to do it at first. I kept trying and tryrying to complete the task at hand. After like 5-10 minutes, I was able to make a face mask.

Hanna mask

Hanna Ludovico-- I asked my mom to help me make my face mask because I wanted to make sure that it came out as close to perfect as possible. It was a lot of fun choosing a fabric to use because my mom has a lot to pick from. It was a little difficult to make but I am so glad that I did because now not only do I know how to make a face mask, I have a mask to take with me to the store! Maybe I’ll finally be allowed to come with my parents now! I would like to add that the mask is very comfortable and doesn’t irritate my face. :)
