Intermediate East selfie celebration main

Intermediate East students take full advantage of the selfie station during a fun, family-friendly, and literature-focused event at the school Feb. 24.

Feb. 27, 2023-- The tagline for Intermediate East’s “Selfie Celebration” Feb. 24 was Celebrating all that we are and what we aspire to become, and the positivity was palpable.

“This is amazing,” exclaimed one of the parents looking around the room in awe. More than 100 students and families filled the Intermediate East cafeteria to enjoy practicing social-emotional learning activities during the event sponsored by a grant through Toms River Education Association.

Student attendees even received a swag bag that included a positive message t-shirt; Hello Sun, Moon and Stars write-your-own-story book; a notepad; and pencils with positive notes like “You Are Your Own Author-ity,” a reminder they are the writer of their own story.

Angela Germano and Shalini Breault

Intermediate East language arts teacher Angela Germano (right) laughs with Shalini Breault, the selfie celebration's special guest-- an author, speaker, Reiki master and teacher.

The celebration was literature-based, and best-selling children’s book author Shalini Breault led students in yoga and meditation movements as families connected and bonded. Students then created crafty vision boards and walked the red carpet with their family and friends, taking lots of fun selfies along the way.

Intermediate East teacher Angela Germano helped orchestrate the event, and district Supervisor Tiffany Lucey was impressed.

“With options for students like taking a deep dive into literature and vision boards, stretching and breathing together, or posing with family and friends for a selfie, Ms. Germano’s commitment to organizing a fun and meaningful event for children is selfless, and I'm grateful,” Lucey said.

By the end of the celebration, many children had beautiful Sunshine Sparkle fairy hair and were playfully joking around with friends and family members. Those families voiced their appreciation as well, thanking Germano and her grant co-writer Nancy Jubert for their efforts. Additional photos below.
