May 13, 2026- Cedar Grove Elementary School students spent the month of April exploring what it means to be a global citizen through the I Care About Our Community and Our World initiative. This SEL (social emotional learning), slides-based project emphasizes that being responsible begins with oneself and extends to one's school, the local Toms River community, and the entire world.

"Our Proud Patriots didn’t just talk about these values," said Supervisor Christine Manna, "they put them into action."

On Tuesday night, May 12, fifth-grade Peer Leadership students and staff members that included Manna, Tracy Hanson, and Christina Goldman brought their compassion and energy to the Rose Garden Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Putting their classroom discussions about the value of "giving your time" into practice, students spent the evening side-by-side with residents.

The room was filled with smiles and shared stories as everyone worked together on brain teasers, puzzles, and interview packets. This heartwarming visit proved that when youngsters decide to volunteer, they don't just change a quiet evening — they brighten the lives of those around them.

"I created these slides because I believe that academic excellence is most powerful when paired with civic heart," said Manna. "By teaching students to realize the impact they have on their community and the world, we are ensuring they grow into productive citizens who understand that their greatest contribution is the kindness they extend to others."

While the visit undoubtedly left a mark on the residents of Rose Garden, the lessons students carried home were even greater. The students have already verbalized that they're looking forward to the next visit, and are discovering exactly what it means to lead with heart.
