Rodriguez kids play hero to Louie

April 1, 2026- Louie — the beloved pug of Director of Student Services John Green — had become loose and escaped from his harness in the parking lot of PetSmart after being spooked by a delivery truck last week. Headed toward the busy intersection of Hooper and Bay avenues, Louie was putting himself in harm's way, and despite his best efforts to corral him, all Mr. Green could do was watch and brace for the worst.

When Louie made it to the Ocean County Mall parking lot unscathed, a number of Good Samaritans stepped up to help, with three siblings in particular working together to save the pup. Intermediate North's Angelina Rodriguez, Walnut Street's Aiden Rodriguez, and West Dover's Adelina Rodriguez worked together to help reunite Louie with his incredibly grateful owner.

"Toms River Regional Schools believes that being ALL IN is the only way to be," said West Dover Supervisor Kate Melson while announcing Adelina's brave act to her classmates. "Being ALL IN means giving our best effort in our learning each day and working hard to grow academically. It also means showing kindness, supporting one another, and doing the right thing for our community. The Rodriguez family truly demonstrated what that looks like. Their actions are a wonderful reminder that being ALL IN means caring about others, helping when someone is in need, and showing kindness every day."

Green himself feels forever indebted to the Rodriguez kids, and showed his gratitude by awarding them certificates of kindness and baskets filled with goodies and gift cards. It was the least he could do.

Because he said the entire incident not only reunited him with Louie, but reaffirmed his faith in humanity.

Thank you and congratulations to these young heroes (below), who truly acted on what it means to be ALL IN when it mattered most.

Who couldn't love Louie? And it was certainly love, and kindness, which saved the two-year old pup from harm.
