May 19, 2026- James Mauti (above) is one of the founding members of High School North's Fishing Club. He has now added to his angling bonafides by winning the 35th Annual Governor's Cup, the Garden State Surf Fishing Classic held May 17 at Island Beach State Park.

The senior — who, when he's not fishing, excels at wrestling, lacrosse, and football — won the student division, hauling in a 31-inch striped bass. For his efforts, Mauti won a host of prizes and merch (top right), although the bragging rights and concrete proof of his big catch (bottom right) might be the most important takeaway for the true fisherman.

Funds raised from the Governor's Cup go toward improving beach access, surf fishing instruction programs, and equipment plus marine education and restoration projects.

Congratulations, James!
