Joseph A. Citta

Being inducted into the Toms River Schools Hall of Fame comes long after Mr. Citta has been recognized for his outstanding contributions by many other organizations. In 1975, the Boy Scouts of America recognized Mr. Citta at its First Annual Distinguished Citizen Award dinner. This was followed in 1977 by the Greater Toms River Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the year award and in 1986 the Ocean County college foundation presented a tribute to him as their primary benefactor. He was one of the prime movers in the creation of the Novins Planetarium and served for six years as Chairman of the Board for the Ocean County College Foundation.

A veteran of World War II with an undergraduate degree from Ursinus and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Mr. Citta participated in war crimes trials, later becoming an attorney in Toms River and the county's first public defender. Active in real estate and business in addition to his law practice, Mr. Citta also found time to be President of the Toms River Schools Board of Education for three years, and at various times President of the Toms River Athletic Association, the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Ocean County Council, Boy Scouts of America.
